Why should the voters pick you?

“We need some new conservative voices in Des Moines. We also need some fresh eyes on the problems we face.

“I’m a consistent, principled conservative with a long track record of standing by what the Republican platform is supposed to stand for. I’ve been at this for 25 years. I’m not an unknown quantity.”

The candidate said he takes no money from political action committees.

“I’m beholden to no one but my constituents in the 10th District,” he said.

What is your vision for the future of this state?

“I would like to go back to when our state’s motto was ‘A Place to Grow.’ This district includes communities like Pocahontas County which has seen significant population loss, according to the last census. Our small towns are suffering. We need to make this an attractive place for all of our young people to stay and prosper and also we want to make this a place for people to come to work and live.”

He said cutting taxes and regulations is the key to creating such an environment.

“I think the change that needs to be made fundamentally is in terms of taxation and regulation,” he said.

He described the tax cut bill passed during the 2018 legislative session as “trimming around the edges.”

He said he wants to abolish the state income tax.

What is the No. 1 issue facing the state and what would you seek to do about it if you’re elected?

“The No. 1 problem facing the state and the nation is the erosion of the moral basis of a republican form of government. And at the basis of that erosion is abortion on demand. As long as we allow abortion to take place we’re destroying the moral basis of our republican form of government.”

What’s your opinion of the state’s new abortion law?

“The bill is insufficient. It has no penalties. It’s full of loopholes. It’s going to go down in flames in the courts.”

The new state law prohibits abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, but it provides exceptions for cases of rape and incest and situations in which the baby would not be able to survive outside the womb. Hoefling said he opposes those exceptions.

He said women who become pregnant as a result of rape or incest “have an obligation to protect that child until it’s born. Then they have the option of giving the child up for adoption.”

“It’s barbaric to kill one person because of the crime of another person,” he said.

What do you think should be done to improve the state’s Medicaid system?

“I’m not going to pretend that I have all the answers to that. I’m unsure at this point what is the right course to take.”

A long-time Lohrville resident, who has made a career of national political involvement, has turned his sights closer to home.

Tom Hoefling is challenging incumbent State Rep. Mike Sexton for the Republican nomination to run for the House District 10 seat this fall. He said he, like many other Republicans he meets, is frustrated with a party that sends its representatives to local and federal legislatures, only to see those Republicans fail to follow through with promises to achieve conservative ideals.
“It’s particularly acute nationally,” Hoefling said. “That last omnibus bill funded Planned Parenthood and the Affordable Care Act.”

That’s despite the voices of Republican voters who don’t support either of those, Hoefling said.

“We’re just kind of tired of it,” he said. “I think I represent the conservative rank and file of Republicans.”

Well, I've personally delivered our campaign materials to virtually every home in 27 towns in the district, so far. Just finishing up the last few as we head for the final week before the primary. Today I was in several communities, including Renwick, in Humboldt County, and was able to enjoy their beautiful veterans memorial. The whole town was decked out in flags for Memorial Day. It's a great little town!

Snapped a couple of shots of our beautiful Iowa capitol building this week when we went down to file the campaign paperwork. My friend James Hirschberg says we'd be better off if the legislature met in a tent out in a field instead of in such sumptuous surroundings. Perhaps he's right. By the way, the star next to the flag in the top of the capitol dome is the medallion of the Grand Army of the Republic. I've included a picture of my Civil War veteran great-great grandfather Sebastian Buehler, who helped settle the Odebolt area, wearing his GAR medallion and ribbon on his lapel.

A Lohrville man vowing to end abortion and expand gun rights has launched a primary election challenge to state Rep. Mike Sexton.

Tom Hoefling announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination in House District 10 Thursday. He will face Sexton, a Rockwell City Republican seeking his third term, in the June 4 primary election.

House District 10 includes Calhoun, Humboldt and Pocahontas counties, plus western Webster County.

“I’m not satisfied with the kind of representation we’re getting down there,”Hoefling said, referring to the state Capitol in Des Moines.
“I’m running against the status quo,” he added. “I’m a voice for thousands of conservative Iowans who are fed up with the kind of representation we’ve been getting in Des Moines. What good does it do to elect Republicans if they’re not going to govern according to Republican principles?”

Long-time conservative political activist Tom Hoefling of Lohrville today announced his intention to seek the Republican nomination for the Iowa House of Representatives in District 10.
 
House District 10 includes Humboldt, Pocahontas, and Calhoun counties, and the southwest corner of Webster County. The seat is currently held by Mike Sexton. The primary is set for June 5th.
 
Tom is a former member of the Republican State Central Committee. He is also the former national political director for Dr. Alan Keyes. In 2014, he was the sole challenger to former governor Terry Branstad in the Republican gubernatorial primary.
 
Tom Hoefling was named in 2015 by Newsmax as one of the 100 most influential pro-life leaders in America. American Right to Life rates him as a Tier One Personhood Pro-Life leader. In 2008, he founded Equal Protection for Posterity, a national grassroots organization that is completely dedicated to abolishing the practice of abortion.
 
“I’m running against the status quo. I’m a voice for thousands of conservative Iowans who are fed up with the kind of representation we’ve been getting in Des Moines. What good does it do to elect Republicans if they’re not going to govern according to conservative principles? If elected, I will be a staunch advocate for Life from Conception and Constitutional Carry legislation, fundamental tax and regulatory reform, and true local control of our schools. I will continue to fight federal or state-mandated curriculum requirements like Common Core. I will also push hard for real judicial reform, including a constitutional amendment that takes the power of the appointment of judges out of the hands of the bar association and puts it back where it belongs, in the hands of the people and their elected representatives,” Hoefling said.
 
In closing, he added, “I’m not a ‘go-along to get-along’ kind of guy. I will put tremendous pressure on the leadership of the House to actually govern according to the fundamental American principles that have traditionally been part of the Republican platform.”
