The most important point of contention between Hoefling and Branstad: The protection of the God-given, unalienable, EQUAL right to live

On Friday night in Cedar Rapids the designated stand-in for my opponent, former State Representative Jeff Kaufmann, boasted about how every "pro-life" law on the books in our state was signed by Terry Branstad.

Here's the gigantic problem with that brag: In order to write a truly pro-life bill, one that actually fulfills the explicit, absolute requirements of the Iowa and the U.S. Constitutions, that all persons be protected equally in their God-given, unalienable right to live, you have to erase Terry Branstad's entire "pro-life" legacy from the Iowa Code.

I know. I helped craft Tom Shaw's House File 138, which meets the moral and constitutional test of a true pro-life bill. In addition to rightly identifying the unborn child as a person, its language scrubbed all the unconstitutional Branstad code sections that in effect end with "and then you can kill the baby."

Of course, the Branstad Republican establishment has consistently insisted on burying HF-138 in committee, and pushing even more unconstitutional "pro-life" legislation, so that they can then go out once again and pretend to their pro-life constituency that they are doing something to stop this American holocaust.

Wake up, people. Quit buying the lie. Read your own constitutions, and start demanding that those who represent you fulfill the primary purpose and duty of their offices, which is the defense of the supreme right of every single individual human being.

Grassroots parents’ groups across the country who, through new media, have developed organizations around opposition to the Common Core State Standards are making the education initiative central to the 2014 mid-term elections. Opposed equally by people on the right and the left, Republicans and Democrats alike, the Common Core initiative is poised to separate, perhaps like no other issue, the political candidates who reflect the will of “we the people” from big government bureaucrats.

Those who support the standards, in fact, are likely to be labeled “establishment” politicians, regardless of their party affiliation. They are the supporters of government intervention and encroachment upon both states’ and parental rights, and they advocate for the alliance of big business groups, such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and political elites.

""Good morning, Pastor," I said, the pieces of the puzzle falling together in my mind. "Can we help you?" I looked at the watch he had brought in for repair. It required a very hard-to-find spare part. "But for you, Pastor, we will do our very best. And now I have something to confess."

The pastor's eyes clouded. "Confess?"

I drew him out the back door of the shop and up the stairs to the dining room.

"I confess that I too am searching for something." The pastor's face was now wrinkled with a frown. "Would you be willing to take a Jewish mother and her baby into your home? They will almost certainly be arrested otherwise."

Color drained from the man's face. He took a step back from me. "Miss ten Boom! I do hope you're not involved with any of the this illegal concealment and undercover business. It's just not safe! Think of your father! And your sister--she's never been strong!"

On impulse I told the pastor to wait and ran upstairs. Betsie had put the newcomers in Willem's old room, the farthest from windows on the street. I asked the mother's permission to borrow the infant: the little thing weighed hardly anything in my arms.

Back in the dining room I pulled back the coverlet from the baby's face.

There was a long silence. The man bent forward, his hand in spite of himself reaching for the tiny first curled round the blanket. For a moment I saw compassion and fear struggle in his face. Then he straightened. "No. Definitely not. We could lose our lives for that Jewish child!"

Unseen by either of us, Father had appeared in the doorway. "Give the child to me, Corrie," he said.

Father held the baby close, his white beard brushing its cheek, looking into the little face with eyes as blue and innocent as the baby's own. At last he looked up at the pastor. "You say we could lose our lives for this child. I would consider that the greatest honor that could come to my family.""

“I can’t believe how quickly the members of Iowa Gun Owners stepped in and helped us with this local problem. Tell them that gun owners in George extend a huge ‘Thank you’ to them and a bunch of us will be joining IGO immediately!”

This was the call that I got this morning from multiple residents of the city of George, IA, who were mobilized yesterday en masse with the help of Iowa Gun Owners as the George City Council was poised to vote, today, on a proposal to ban all defensive weapons on city property.

But unlike some of city bans that we’ve seen, this small town in NW IA has a true “Boss Hogg” mentality as the language had a carve-out for elected officials like the very City Council members who would be voting to end your ability to defend your family!

That’s right, “elected officials” would still be allowed to carry at the town hall, town pool, town baseball complex, etc.

But the taxpayers who pay to build and maintain these city properties would have to hope that a deputy could make it to town in time to save them should a violent criminal attack them.

Tom Hoefling wears the underdog label with pride.

The Lohrville Republican, a longtime conservative activist, is on the ballot in the GOP gubernatorial primary, the lone challenger there to Gov. Terry Branstad, a five-term officeholder seeking a sixth, four-year stint at Terrace Hill.

Does Hoefling, 53, a political consultant, think he realistically has a chance to defeat Branstad?

"People ask me that all the time," Hoefling said. "I can't beat Branstad, but the people can if they choose to."

Born in Omaha, Neb., and raised in Ralston, Neb., Hoefling has lived in the Lohrville area since the mid-1990s.

"We're poor as a church mouse, and it's primarily because I'm more activist than consultant," said Hoefling, a married father of eight children.

He described himself as "pro-life, pro-family and pro-gun."

"The bottom line is I represent the Republican base," Hoefling said.

'Providence'

Providence. Our modern day has lost this beautiful word.

Webster's 1828 dictionary explains its deepest meaning: "He that acknowledges a creation and denies a providence, involves himself in a palpable contradiction; for the same power which caused a thing to exist is necessary to continue its existence."

By the insight of Noah Webster, we should understand that the Creator, God, is also the Provider. We should see that because the Lord God made us and loves us, then He has not left us alone, but has additionally provided a way for us to have our needs met.

Popular opinion might urge that our choices in life be based in worldly calculations, guided by human presumptions and desires.  Under this outside pressure, believers in God may be tempted to abandon Him in the name of providing for family.  Or even worse, to question whether His decision to create a new human being includes no intended providence for that child.

I think, with Noah Webster, the contradiction is clear, and the intent of God for us unmistakable.

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart," the scripture says. "And lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thine ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct thy paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6) 

The world is awash in money. Plenty of folks treat pursuing material things as more important than raising a family or doing anything else.  But since the Lord is the provider of resources, all things are dependent upon Him.  At any instant, He can provide, or take away.  We have to trust His all-knowing perspective in earthly things, especially when it comes to matters that determine a family and its intended purpose.  As we go through life, we all innately know, we would be foolish to sacrifice eternal joy for the temporary comforts of this world. 

I am blessed to have married someone who did not say, "No, no, no.  No more kids until we have money."  I am also pleased that the Lord has enabled us, little by little, day by day, to survive while doing the political work that we hope will make some difference in this world.  We were brought together in the first place for that reason, to improve the odds that future generations will live in liberty—the birthright of every American, and the duty of everyone to preserve.  Sacrifice in worldly things has been a price to pay for the privilege of our work, and we have had to rely on the help of others.  But so long as we have trusted the Lord, each experience has been a blessing.  And the greatest blessing of all is, each day we are gifted with the constant presence of five little children, the very reason we continue our fight to restore republican governance and uphold the Constitution. 

Our life together has been a blessed experiment in faith.  A miracle in and of itself.   

When we married eight years ago, we decided to trust in the Lord, and see what He would do. The answer thus far is, quite a bit.  He has provided for us every step of the way.  I never cease to be amazed.

Just today, we accepted the sad truth that our family van was inoperable.  A little faith and an hour later, we found a replacement.  Just like that.  The beauty is, it's a no-frills van, no more and no less than we needed.  A human being could not have planned better. 

God is good.  Trust Him.  He does provide.

Whether a David-vs.-Goliath candidate should be given an opportunity to debate Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad is the topic of debate in some GOP circles today.

After a conservative blogger wrote about Branstad "refusing" to debate Republican challenger Tom Hoefling, a top party leader scolded the blogger for giving Hoefling any attention. The scolding triggered a grassroots outcry against the "orchestrated whisper campaign within the GOP to squelch dissent."

This week Terry Branstad told the Newton Daily News that he is too busy being Governor to debate Tom Hoefling, his only opponent in the Republican gubernatorial primary on June 3rd.  

Hoefling responded on Friday by saying, "Terry Branstad is leaving the citizens of Iowa out of his equation. The governor works for the people, at their pleasure. They deserve to have a full airing out of the candidates' guiding principles, suggested public policies, and vision for the future of our state, in every election. No politician should ever be too busy for that. By declining to debate, and depriving the people of their right to hear from both candidates who will be on their primary ballots, he has shown that he thinks he is now above defending his policies as governor to the rank and file of his own party, and that he has no answer to my pointed conservative criticisms of those policies in recent months. So, I'll simply have to take my case directly to the people. In the end, they're the boss. They're the ones who will decide, and they're the ones who will have to live with the results of that choice for the next four years, and beyond."

Branstad breaks silence 17 days after debate challenge from Hoefling

After 17 days, Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad broke his silence Wednesday regarding an offer from his primary opponent, Tom Hoefling, to debate before the June 3 primary.

“My intention is to focus on my job as being governor,” Branstad said. “I guess my feeling is that I haven’t seen anything other than that he got enough signatures to file. I haven’t seen anything to consider him a very serious candidate.”

“I do intend to debate the general election opponent, but I think it’s pretty doubtful that we’re going to have time to debate the primary because we have the legislative session to accomplish, and we have many other things to get done.”

Hoefling’s debate proposal includes four smaller events hosted and organized by willing county GOP organizations within the four congressional districts, and would culminate in a large venue debate hosted by the state party.

"Just as 'good fences make for good neighbors,' good government is mainly about knowing where the legitimate boundaries are, and having the courage to defend those borders forcefully. This is true in terms of the defense of our territory, our security, and our national sovereignty, but it also applies to the sworn duty of all of those in government to equally protect the God-given, unalienable rights of each individual person, from their creation onward, their sacred obligation to stay well within the enumerated powers of our constitutions, and of the role legitimate government must play in balancing the competing rights and interests of the people, in order to establish justice."
